The Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association (PNBA) kicked off its three-day Fall Tradeshow in Portland, Oregon, from September 19-21. The event started with a series of pre-show parties on Monday that served as a warm-up for attendees. Although not listed on the official schedule, these parties were advertised in the newsletter. Tin House Books held an open house in its northwest Portland offices, Scholastic hosted a happy hour, and the teams of the Collective Book Studio and Gibbs Smith threw a mixer featuring selections inspired by A.J. Dean’s upcoming book “Friday Night Cocktails.”

Brian Juenemann, the executive director of PNBA, expressed his hopes that these pre-show parties become a regular tradition. These gatherings provided an opportunity for members to network and build connections before the official start of the tradeshow.

Authors on the Map Brunch

PNBA invited over 70 authors to meet and connect with booksellers during the tradeshow. The event began with an “Authors on the Map” brunch that showcased ten Northwest authors. The Big Pitch

The Big Pitch is PNBA’s annual event where sales representatives passionately promote their top book recommendations to booksellers. This four-hour session serves as an intensive sales pitch, highlighting the most compelling and noteworthy titles. Booksellers have the opportunity to listen to the pitches and engage with the sales reps to understand the unique selling points of each book.

Explore the Floor

Following The Big Pitch, booksellers had the chance to explore the floor during the soft-open of the exhibit hall. This early access allowed them to browse through the tables, network with exhibitors, and acquire coveted Advance Reading Copies (ARCs) of upcoming books. These ARCs enable booksellers to have firsthand knowledge of the titles and engage in conversations with their customers about eagerly anticipated releases.
