What’s the story behind the story?

The story behind “To Castle Kingside” is a tale that has been over 30 years in the making. It all began with a role-playing game called “HiTec” that John and his friends created when they were teenagers. Tired of the standard battles with dragons and caves of treasure, they decided to come up with their own science fiction RPG. The universe and characters they created for “HiTec” stuck with John throughout the years, and he finally decided to give them new life in the form of a novel. This book is a tribute to the imagination and creativity of his youth.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

John doesn’t have a specific favorite genre to write in since this is his debut novel, but he had a great deal of joy in writing “To Castle Kingside.” As for his favorite genres to read, he leans towards high fantasy, gaslight fantasy, supernatural horror, and amateur sleuth mysteries. While he loves watching science fiction, he hasn’t read much of it. However, he is open to exploring different genres in the future and trying his hand at writing outside of his comfort zone.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

After spending the last few years immersed in writing and editing “To Castle Kingside,” John’s “to be read” pile has grown significantly. He has accumulated a staggering number of books, TV shows, movies, and video games that he plans to dive into. However, he is not sure where to start, so he is turning to his readers for recommendations. John believes that those who enjoyed his book would have great suggestions for him, so he welcomes any recommendations from his fans.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

John’s favorite scenes in the book were the ones that he didn’t plan to write at all. These were the moments when the story began telling itself, and he was merely taking dictation from the characters and their actions. These unplanned scenes surprised him as a writer and allowed him to experience the tale as a reader, enjoying the unexpected turns the story took. These scenes remain his favorites even upon rereading the book.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

While John doesn’t have any particularly quirky habits, he has a strict writing routine that works for him. He requires absolute silence when he writes, which he can only find during the dark solitude of nighttime. He follows a routine of having dinner, taking a short nap, and then retreating into his office from 9:00PM to 4:00AM. He writes with no lights on, except for the glow of his hutch lamp shining down on the keyboard and the glare of the monitor. The dark silence helps him get into the right headspace for writing. Additionally, John grew a large pandemic beard and didn’t shave or trim it until he finished writing the book. He believed that his creativity flowed from the power of the beard, but he was relieved to finally shave it off after a year.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

John doesn’t have a specific motto or quote that he lives by, but if he were to come up with one based on his recent experiences, it would be “you never finish anything you don’t start.” This simple statement holds a profound truth in that starting something is the first step towards completion. It serves as a reminder to push through the challenges and obstacles that may arise during the creative process.
